Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a subset of artificial intelligence. It is the study of how computers can understand, analyze, and produce human language. In recent times, it has been employed in many applications such as speech recognition and speech synthesis, machine translation, summarization, information retrieval, text mining and question answering.

NLP has been a part of artificial intelligence for a long time now. The term itself was coined in 1956 by Arthur Samuel when he worked on a project for IBM.

The first application of NLP was to solve problems in the field of mathematics-specifically to help with algebraic expressions that included linguistic variables or parameters. This application is still used today where we can see AI powered programs which help with solving equations or performing calculations on numbers with mathematical symbols.
